Catalog on the architect Bjarke Ingels
Overview
As the founder and creative partner of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Bjarke Ingels has emerged as the definitive face of a new generation of global architects. His work famously challenges traditional boundaries, blending hedonistic sustainability with functional playfulness. This catalog serves as a curated journey into that vision, exploring how Ingels perceives the future of our built environment. The catalog is structured into four distinct chapters, each dedicated to a landmark project, and is preceded by an in-depth interview that provides personal insight into his creative process.
My research into Ingels' work revealed two consistent threads that became the foundation for the catalog's visual identity:
Environmental Integration: A profound connection to the natural world is present in every BIG project. Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for Ingels — it is a core structural value. To honor this, I made the conscious decision to print the catalog on recycled paper, aligning the physical medium with the architect's ecological philosophy.
Geometric Rationalism: I observed that the square element is a recurring motif in his work, representing a balance between modularity and strength. This led to the choice of a square format for the catalog itself. To maintain a cohesive visual language, I implemented a rigid external square grid that delimits the content, ensuring that the layout feels as structured and intentional as a Bjarke Ingels building.
